Ensemble Playing Workshop for Beginners

Tuesday 2nd May 2023, 5:30pm - 7:00pm 29-31 Coney Street
Ensemble music

Description

Join Christian Topman — musician, bass player, teacher, workshop leader and co founder of The Arts Barge Project — for an in person practical ensemble playing workshop for beginners held at the StreetLife Hub.

This workshop will introduce you to the experience of playing alongside others in a pressure-free, friendly environment. We will start as a larger group focusing on how to play collectively, the balance between different instruments and achieving a cohesive ensemble sound. We will then split into smaller groups each with a dedicated tutor to focus on closer music work before coming back together for a mini performance as one!

The workshop is open to all and we welcome all instruments, abilities and ages. All we ask is that you complete a short questionnaire about what you play and your current ability so we can tailor the workshop activity.

At the end of the session we hope that you have been inspired to play with others and will be very happy to advise on local orchestras, ensembles and other collectives for you try out.

About your workshop host: Christian Topman teaches Double Bass and Bass Guitar at York Music Centre as well as leading the Big Band. Christian is a very experienced music teacher and freelance musician who performs professionally regularly in orchestras, festivals and jazz ensembles. Christian also leads a ukulele ensemble on a Saturday morning at York Music Centre and leads whole-class sessions in schools.

Please note there are no toilet or catering facilities at the StreetLife hub. You are welcome to bring your own drinks and snacks.
