Get to grips with the basics of letterpress printing in this introductory workshop from Professor Helen Smith of the University of York. In this two-hour session, you will get the chance to set a line of metal type, see what it means to lock up a forme, and try your hand printing with a tabletop Adana press. All materials will be supplied, and you will go home with copies of your own hand-printed postcard, inspired by letterpress printing and its histories.
Helen Smith is Professor of Renaissance Literature and Head of the Department of English and Related Literature at the University of York. She has published widely on printing and its histories, and leads the printing strand of the StreetLife project. With Dr JT Welsch, Helen is co-founder of Thin Ice Press, the University of York's in-house letterpress printing studio.
This event is free to attend, but requires booking.
