Steel pan and musical identity of Trinidad

Tuesday 17th May 2022, 3:30pm - 4:30pm 29-31 Coney Street

Description

The pan (or steel drum) is the national instrument of Trinidad. However, it was not always so highly regarded. Originally associated with a violent past, the art form has emerged as a worldwide phenomenon from its humble beginnings. This workshop will feature performance and history of the pan, and present the rich musical heritage of this unique instrument and its connection to the musical identity of Trinidad.

Dr. Ken Broadway has been performing on the steel pan and studying the art form for the past 25 years. He has served as the Professor of Percussion at the University of Florida since 1997, and has performed with the Solo Pan Knights of Trinidad in the Panorama Competition. He has also attended and served on the faculty of the Mannette Steel Drum Workshop, developed by the late pan innovator Ellie Mannette.
