BEASTS IN THE BELFRY, WILLIAM ON YOUR WALLS
The houses, mercantile spaces and places of worship of 11th and 12th century York would have been a riot of design and colour, often imagined, drawn out and stitched by the city's inhabitants. Although very few early pieces have survived we can trace them through what remains and their disposal through wills and other legal documents of the period.
Most of us know and have seen the Bayeux Embroidery (also known as the Bayeux Tapestry) which was executed by Anglo Saxon needleworkers, in a domestic period where heavy wall and door hangings were key to the warmth and comfort of a healthy living space, men and women would have embroidered wall hangings. some of them in stitched dialogue, and in our one day workshop we will explore motifs and design process which will culminate in our attendees leaving with a started project on a working frame to finish at home, which can then be incorporated into a bag or piece of soft furnishing.
If you attended the previous class we’d be grateful if you could bring back and reuse the frame used and taken away, so we can teach sustainably.
