Fairfax House, Castlegate

Many iconic locations were used in the filming of Gentleman Jack, a BBC One and HBO co-production written by Sally Wainwright on the life of lesbian diarist Anne Lister.

Fairfax House here was used for the interior shots of Vere Hobart’s house. Hobart was a close friend and romantic interest of Lister’s, and Lister was said to be heartbroken upon hearing of her engagement to a man. Other locations in York that were featured in filming include Grays Court on Chapter House street, transformed into a boarding house for episode 4, as well as busy street scenes, and the Treasurer’s House starring as the public bar. Shibden Hall itself, in Halifax West Yorkshire was the real site of Anne Lister’s ancestral home inherited from her uncle.

Anne Lister was an iconic queer presence in the city. She is celebrated in many ways, one such instance being the opening of Anne Lister College by the University of York in 2021. The Sally Wainwright PhD Scholarship for the Study of Anne Lister was also advertised for prospective students of the University of York, generously funded by the creator of the television show.
