York Arms Pub, 26 High Petergate

The York Arms is understood as being the oldest gay pub in the city.

To say the gay scene was small was an understatement. Everyone congregated in the York Arms in the shadow of the York Minster on High Petergate. Even though the then landlord was far from welcoming.

Back in the 1980s, York’s only gay bar was the York Arms. In those days, unlike today, the gay side of the bar was nearest the Minster. It was a very busy bar with the LGBT community, and its infamous listing in the International Gay Guide was ‘smoky, crowded, and filthy carpets’!

It was also here that the tradition started in the 1980s to herald in the New Year with the sound of the Minster bells.
